Tea cozy project: I Love Tea

This ultra-simple design incorporates a heartfelt sentiment. You can personalise the cozy and show someone how much you care by substituting their initial for the ‘T’.

Materials

Rowan Handknit DK, 100% cotton (93yd/85m per 50g ball):

1 ball in 205 Linen (A)

Oddments of same yarn in 252 Black (B) and 215 Rosso (C)

A pair of 4.5mm (UK7:US7) needles

Tapestry needle

Tension

20 sts and 28 rows to 4in (10cm) square over st st using 4.5mm needles. Use larger or smaller needles to obtain correct tension.

Body (worked in one piece until end of rib)

Using A, cast on 82 sts and work 8 rows in g-st for lower edge.

Row 1: K41, turn leaving rem sts on holder. Work on these 41 sts for first side.

Row 2: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.

Rows 3–8: Work in st st, keeping a 2-st g-st border at the end of every row.

Rows 9–22: Work motif from chart, placing it centrally. Transfer sts from holder to needle, then place sts from first side on holder. Work 21 rows in st st, keeping a 2-st g-st border at the end of every row.

Next row: P40, k1. Transfer 41 sts from holder to needle; k1, p40 on these sts.

Next RS row: K1,* (k6, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next and alt rows (WS): P all sts.

Next RS row: K1,* (k5, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next RS row: K1,* (k4, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next RS row: K1,* (k3, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next RS row: K1,* (k2, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next RS row: K1,* (k1, k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Next RS row: K1, *(k2tog); rep from * to last st, k1.

Loop yarn through rem st and pull tight.

Bobble

Using C, cast on 3 sts.

Row 1: Inc in first st, k1, inc in last st (5sts).

Row 2: P2 into first st, p1, p2 into next st, p1, p2 into next st (8sts).

Next row: K2tog, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog (5sts).

Next row: P2tog, p1, p2tog (3sts).

Cast off.

Tie knot through last st and use running stitch to go round the edge of knitted circle. Pull tight to form bobble.

Making up

Join top and bottom seam. Sew in ends.

Each square = 1 st and 1 row Read RS rows from R to L and WS rows from L to R

Tip: Work intarsia motifs using small balls of yarn, and do not carry sts across back of work.
